Corfu - Tourist Information

The Ionian Islands, located to the west of mainland Greece, consist of seven islands, the second largest of which is Corfu. The island is known also as Kerkyra from the Greek myth where Poseidon fell in love with the Nymph Korkira and brought her to the island.

The Islands are known for their beautiful beaches, crystal clear seas, Venetian castles and fortresses, olive groves and romantic scenery. Although the islands cater for the 21st century tourist, the traditional way of life is still in evidence today so you really do feel you are stepping back in time.

Popular with Europeans since the Victorian times and made famous by Gerrald Durrel. Corfu is still one of those rare destinations which appeals to all types of holidaymaker no matter their age and tastes.

While it can offer great nightlife for those looking for clubs and discos, the island is also known as the Garden of Eden with lush green countryside, mountains, clear blue seas, fantastic beaches and olive groves.

Just 36 miles in length and 15 miles wide (at its widest part in the north), Corfu has over 3 million evergreen olive trees so even during the hottest summer it remains one of the greenest islands in the Mediterranean. To the north and south of the island you will find long sandy bays while the north east offers rocky caves and shingle beaches. The best sunsets can be found in the west coast with its high cliffs and sandy shores.

Corfu Town, the Island’s capital, is a great destination for a day out. The buildings of this lovely city have preserved their Venetian character and visitors must take time to saunter around the narrow streets known as Kantounia. The old palace is a great place to visit with its colonnade and view of the Spiniada square. The old fortress dominates the landscape and is built on a peninsula that is separated from the town by a small canal...Read More
